A Royal Centenarian: Infanta Marie Adelaïde of Portugal

In Portugal the former royal family rejoiced last week when celebrating the 100th birthday of Infanta donha Maria Adelïde, the last surviving daughter of  Infante dom Miguel of Portugal (1853-1927), Duke of Braganca, and if his second wife the former Princess Maria Theresa of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1870-1935).

It is interesting to note that the Infanta's grandfather, King Miguel I of Portugal (1802-1866), was born nearly 210 years ago!

The Infanta was born in France at St Jean de Luz on 31 January 1912.

In 1945 she married Nicolaas van Uden (1921-1991). They had six children.

The Infanta and her family settled in Portugal. Her husband died in Lisbon in 1991.All along Marie Adelaïde has been a rather unique and unconventional woman, the inspiration for those within the family circle as well as those who have labored with her in many charities and endeavors to help the lesser fortunate.
