UK: Update on The Dukes of Cambridge

We've not seen much of the Duchess of Cambridge since the start of the New Year, but I can reveal that Kate and Prince William have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on their magnificent new home, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk. Last week the pair were up at Sandringham, the Queen's 20,000-acre country estate, on which Anmer Hall is located. The vast Georgian pile was a present to William on his 30th birthday, and the couple plan to divide their time between Norfolk and their London residence, Kensington Palace, from now on. The hall has a swimming pool and tennis courts, and with a brand new conservatory adjoining the kitchen, it is the perfect pad for entertaining.

EUROHISTORY – Another Nice review of The Coburgs of Europe

Another nice review of my last book...

Arturo Beeche's "The Coburgs of Europe" aptly chronicles Europe's most prolific royal dynasty since the Hapsburgs. A fantastic glimpse back to the heyday of European royalty, in particular Elizabeth II's real family before her grandfather George V switched the family name to Windsor because of anti-German antipathy during World War I. Chock full of photos and sketches of long forgotten but well-connected royalty. This offering is a great read and addition to anyone royal book collection.

+ HRH Princess Maria Margarita of BourbonTwo Sicilies
Señora de Maldonado
(1934-2014)

Princess Maria Margarita of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, eldest daughter of Prince Gabriele and his second wife, the former Princess Cecilia Lubomirska, has passed away in Madrid on January 15.

The princess was born in Warsaw, where her parents resided after their wedding, celebrated in Cracow in 1932. Prince Gabriele became a widower in 1929 as his first wife, Princess Malgorzata Czartorisky, had died in Cannes six weeks after giving birth to the couple's only child, Prince Antonio.

After Maria Margarita's birth, Prince Gabriele and Princess Cecilia had two more children: Princess Marie Immaculata (b. 1937) and Prince Casimiro (b. 1938). The couple's eldest son, Giovanni, was born a year before Maria margarita's birth. A talented artist, Prince Giovanni died in Madrid in 2000. He never married and left no descendants.

Princess Maria Margarita eventually settled in Madrid. Her parents had left Poland to escape the devastation brought to the country by the Second World War and both were to die in Brazil, where they had rebuilt their life after the Iron Curtain kept them from returning to Poland. It was in Spain, at San Miguel de Jerez de la Frontera, in fact, that Maria Margarita married don Luis Gonzaga Maldonado y Gordon (b. 1932). The couple had three daughters: Margarita, Claudia and Cecilia. At the time of her death, Princess Maria Margarita had eight grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband don Luis, their three daughters and grandchildren.

The Prince of Wales will take the latest significant step in his journey towards becoming king later this month when a key part of his household merges with Buckingham Palace.
The Prince’s 10-man communications team, which is responsible for his public image, will move from Clarence House to the Palace, where one of the Prince’s most senior courtiers is expected to take charge of publicity for all members of the Royal family.
It will be the first time in a generation that all of the Royal family’s image-makers will work from the same office, and will give the Prince significantly more power than he has now.

Austria: Archduke Karl Talks to The Guardian

Archduke Karl, Head of House Austria, was interviewed by London's The Guardian.

Although he was identified as a descendant of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Karl, of course, does not descend from the Habsburg-Hohenberg marriage. In fact, it was because of the morganatic union between Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Countess Sophie Choteck, the the line of Archduke Otto, Franz Ferdinand's next younger brother, succeeded to the Austro-Hungarian throne in 1916.

Still...it is an interesting interview nonetheless...

+ Baroness Agnes Hoening-O'Carroll (Croÿ in-law)

Baroness Agnes von Hoenning-O’Carrol, the daughter of Baron Zdenko von Hoenning-O’Carrol and Princess Margarite of Lobkowicz, who was married to Count Serafim Miloradovich, passed away on January 3, 2014.

Agnes was the mother-in-law of Duke Rudolf of Croÿ (b. 1955), who married her daughter Alexandra in 1987.

Baron Zdenko Hoenning-O'Carroll, her father, married secondly Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria (1917-2004), one of the daughters of Prince Franz and his wife Isabella, born a Princess of Croÿ. Baron Zdenko, who owned the estate of Sünching, east of Ingolstadt in Bavaria, was born in 1906 and died also at Sünching in 1996, just months before his ninetieth birthday.

Due to Zdenko's married to Princess Adelgunde, descendants from his first marriage to Margarite of Lobkowicz were riased in close contact with members of the Bavarian royal family. It was not surprising then that one of his granddaughters, Countess Alexandra Miloradovich, married then Hereditary Prince Rudolf of Croÿ, a grandson of Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria and his second wife, the former Princess Antonia of Luxembourg.

Duke Rudolf of Croÿ is the eldest son of the late Duke Carl, 14th Duke of Croÿ, and of his wife Princess Gabriele of Bavaria. In 1987 Rudolf married Alexandra at Sünching. The couple now has six children and lives in Merfeld, close to Dülmen. Duchess Alexandra's mother had relocated to Dülmen several years ago. It was there that she died unexpectedly.

Spain: When will the nightmare end

SPAIN’S ailing King Juan Carlos stumbled clumsily through a speech to the armed services' top brass on January 6th, provoking further speculation about his ability to act as head of state. The next day his daughter Princess Cristina (pictured) was accused of “greed” by an investigating magistrate who ordered her to explain, amongst other things, why she billed salsa classes, her children's birthday parties and household crockery to a company she part-owned with her husband, which was allegedly used to commit tax fraud. The two events augured yet another year of turmoil for a royal family with tumbling popular support.
The increasingly frail-looking 76-year-old monarch, who has had five hip operations over the past two years, had hoped the princess would escape the attention of investigating magistrate José Castro, who has already named her husband Iñaki Urdangarín as a suspected embezzler and tax fraudster. But Judge Castro has now also made her an official suspect and told her to appear before him at a court in Palma de Mallorca in March. Under Spanish law that is not a formal indictment and she may yet escape trial, but the magistrate says she has much explaining to do.
